Two Very Different Scores, But Two Losses for Softball at Nassau

4/19/2017 3:43:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GARDEN CITY, NY - Dutchess softball lost both games of their doubleheader on Tuesday against Nassau Community College by scores of 13-0 and 14-12. Two very different results for the Falcons but both equally as frustrating.

In game one, DCC watched the game slip away early and were unable to recover. Trailing 5-0 after the first two innings, Nassau tacked on a 5 spot in the third led by a home run from Rachel Ludwiczak and a grand slam from Julianna Botta. Three more runs in the fourth all but sealed the mercy rule victory for the Lions.

Game two, on the other hand, was a far different story. Dutchess came out of the gates strong with a six run second inning. Both teams exchanged multi-run innings, but with the Falcons leading 12-9 heading into the seventh. A five run walk-off in the bottom of the seventh left Dutchess stunned and on the wrong end of a 14-12 defeat. A two run home run from Nassau's Courtney Ludewig won it for the Lions in game two.

Leading way offensively for the Falcons was Nicole Winglovitz who finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI including a home run. Sophomore Taylor Travis also did her part going 4-for-5 with a home run, setting the tone out of the leadoff spot.

Despite the loss, the Falcons did collect 13 hits in the high-scoring affair. Offense was not the issue for DCC; their defense is what let them down in this one. An astounding seven errors were the downfall for Dutchess in game two.

Sophomore Alyjah Cruz started and finished the game for the Falcons, and despite the crooked score, Cruz did her job on the mound. She finished the game with 6 2/3 innings pitched, 14 runs but unbelievably only three of which were earned, two strikeouts, and no walks.

Nicole Gogh, Christina Conway, Ludwiczak, Geena Fornataro, and Botta each collected multiple hits for Nassau in game two. Fornataro hit two home runs in the contest to go along with Ludewig's game-winning blast.

The Falcons travel to Queensborough Community College on Wednesday, April 19th for a double header.
