Box Score 2 VALHALLA, NY - An early lead helped Dutchess defeat Westchester Community College 5-3 on Sunday in game one of a doubleheader.
The Falcons got the scoring started on a two-run double by starting pitcher
Isiah Nugent in the first inning. Westchester was able to answer right back scoring in both the second and third innings, but DCC kept them off the scoreboard from then on.
Dutchess had a ten hit performance in this one,
Andrew Kemmerer and Nugent led the way each collecting multiple hits for DCC while also driving in two runs each.
The sophomore Nugent contributed not only at the dish but also on the mound in game one. He was pulled in the 5th inning after lasting 4 1/3 innings, surrendering two earned runs, while striking out an impressive nine batters.
Brandon Greenspan and
Joshua Rosario relieved Nugent and shut the door over the final 2 2/3 innings to secure the victory.
In game two, Dutchess came out looking strong through the first five innings, but a seven run sixth inning ended up being their downfall, and eventually Westchester prevailed 9-5.
The Falcons actually managed to outhit the Vikings in this one, 7-6, but it was the walks that Westchester were able to draw in game two that made the difference.
Dutchess captured the lead in the first inning on another
Isiah Nugent double, scoring one run, and put the Falcons out in front. Leading 5-2 into the sixth, three consecutive walks to start the bottom half put Westchester in prime position to capitalize on an opportunity. The Vikings did just that, plating 7 men and putting them in front 9-5, which ultimately was the final in game two.
All in all, Dutchess had a solid day offensively collecting seven hits.
John Wheeler and
Erik Merrill each collected multiple hits for DCC. Wheeler went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the way.
Next up for the Falcons is a home game against Rockland Community College on Thursday, April 13th at 4 pm at Dutchess Stadium.
