Box Score 2 SUFFERN, NY - Dutchess baseball was able to sweep their doubleheader on Saturday at Rockland Community College, thus winning the season series taking three out of four games from their regional rivals. The Falcons took game one by a score of 9-8 and then followed up with a 10-3 victory in game two.
In game one, Dutchess and Rockland traded the lead back-and-forth, but in the ninth inning with the game tied at eight, catcher
Erik Merrill homered off of pitcher Ivan Rodriguez giving the Falcons the lead 9-8, which went on to be the final.
Both offenses were firing on all cylinders in this one with both teams combing for 21 hits.
Blaine Johnson and
Jonathan Lezette helped lead the way, along with Merrill, and provided multi hit games for DCC with Johnson and Lezette adding three hits a piece.
Andrew Kemmerer and sophomore
Andrew Thrasher tallied three RBI each to help the cause in the one and two hole, respectively.
Rockland added a pair of home runs in game one when Bryan Borruso homered in the third inning and Brian Rotella cracked one in the fourth.
Chris Dreier earned the victory for Dutchess in relief of
John Wheeler and was lights out. He tossed four innings, surrendering no runs, one hit, striking out one, while walking none.
Brian Santiago was able to nail down the one out save in the ninth.
In game two, Dutchess pulled ahead of Rockland in the fourth inning and did not look back, resulting in a 10-3 win.
Tied at 3-3 in the fourth, Steven Richards doubled off of Bryan Borruso, driving in two runs to give the Falcons the lead, which they would never give back. Dutchess would scored three runs in the fifth inning, thanks to home runs from sophomore third baseman
John Wheeler and freshman outfielder
Jonathan Lezette.
Andrew Kemmerer earned the win for the Falcons, firing a quality start lasting six innings, giving up three runs, nine hits, striking out five, and walking just one.
Following their 12 hit onslaught in game one, DCC did one better in game two finishing with 13 hits in the game. Wheeler, Lezette, Richards, and Kemmerer each collected multiple hits for Dutchess. Rockland matched their game one total with nine hits. Patrick Bateman, William Shroba, and Rotella each had multi-hit games for RCC.
Dutchess currently stands at 10-5 on the season and tied with Westchester and Ulster at 5-3 within Region 15. Next on the schedule for the Falcons is a road date with Orange County Community College on Thursday April 20th.
