Men's Soccer Team Falls to HVCC in Season Opener

9/5/2019 8:03:00 PM

Box Score The Men's soccer team opened up their season by traveling to Hudson, NY to face the Hudson Valley Community College Vikings. In a hard fought battle the team fell to the Vikings in a close 3-1 game.

The Falcons started off slow, and ended up down three until Anointing Akpojetavwo scored an unassisted goal at the end of the first half. The second half was filled with multiple scoring chances for both teams, but the Falcons were unable to put the ball behind the net and recover from their three goal deficit.

Tri-Captain Manny Alfonso-Jiminez:   In our first match of the season the starting roster had some surprises but by the end of the match I was enthralled.  In the first half of the match we were a bit shaky with our lone pre- season scrimmage canceled but we settled in as the match progressed. The second half led to the elimination of the first half errors, better ball possession, increased communication and better penetration into our attacking third.I fully expect the team to improve in confidence level and intensity in our upcoming matches.

Coach Jim Purdy:  As the season began the coaching staff with still looking for the right "fit" for several players and positions. We made some adjustments as the match played on and the team responded holding the opposition scoreless in the second half.  At the same time the team created multiple opportunities going forward but failed to find the back of the net. We will build off the positives and work to minimize the negatives and look for overall improvement in upcoming matches.

The team is looking to rebound in their match on Saturday September 7 against Ulster Community College at 2:00 PM.
