Athletics Winter Update 2022

W Volleyball 

The Dutchess Community College Women's Volleyball Team completed the Fall 2022 Regular Season with a Region XV Record of 15-3 and a Mid-Hudson Conference Record of 7-1.  The team was led by its four sophomores - Leah Vitiello, Kathleen Brennan, Jordyn Wilsea, and Emily Parvar and amazing play by their six freshman players - Alexa Reinhard, Lauren Siegel, Grace Ferretti, Nicole Spero, Kaitlin Robin, and Gabrielle Radovic. The team was the #3 overall seed in Region XV and the #1 seed in the Mid-Hudson Conference and Regular Season Champions.   

On 10/18/22, Dutchess CC hosted the Mid-Hudson Conference Tournament where they defeated #4 seeded Orange CC 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-12) in the Semifinal Round and #2 seeded Ulster CC 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-23, 25-13) to win the Mid-Hudson Conference Championship.   

On 10/20/22, #3 ranked Dutchess CC began competition in the Region XV Tournament where they defeated #6 FIT 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-20) to advance to the Semifinals.  On 10/22/22 Dutchess traveled to Orange CC for the semifinal and final rounds of the Region XV Tournament.  The team defeated #2 ranked Borough of Manhattan CC in the semifinal round 3-1 (25-10, 18-25, 25-18, 25-17) and advanced to the Region XV Finals against #1 ranked Monroe-Bronx CC.  Dutchess defeated Monroe-Bronx 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-21), winning the Region XV DIII Championship.  Sophomore Leah Vitiello was Tournament MVP and sophomores Kathleen Brennan and Jordyn Wilsea were selected to the All-Tournament Team.   

The team finished the season with an overall record of 20-3 and was ranked #16 in the country based on the NJCAA DIII Volleyball Rankings poll.   

The team was coached by Coach Frank Sanfilippo has been the coach at DCC since 2016.  Assistant Coach and former DCC player Zarissa Wheeler has been with the team since 2019 and Assistant Coach Dolores Spero joined the coaching staff this season.  

The team was crowned the District Northeast A Champions on 10/27/22 and as a result, earned a spot at the DIII Women's Volleyball NJCAA National Championship.    

The team traveled to Rochester, Minnesota for the 12-team tournament which took place from 11/10/22 – 11/12/22.   The Volleyball Team finished the season with an overall record of 22-5.   The team was MHC Champs, Region XV Champs, Northeast District A Champs, and the #11 seed in the DIII National Championship.  The Team finished the National Tournament 2-2, defeating #6 Harrisburg, PA and #10 Finger Lakes, NY to finish 6th overall in the country in the 12-team tournament.  I am working on getting the 2022 logos to update the MHC and Region XV Banners and a new National Tournament Banner for Volleyball.  We will have a banner raising ceremony in Spring 2023 to celebrate the team's success.   

 2022 Volleyball Accolades 

The team recognized 4 sophomores this season at Sophomore Night where the team was victorious against Ulster CC - Leah Vitiello, Kathleen Brennan, Jordyn Wilsea, and Emily Parvar 

Jordyn Wilsea recorded her 1000 assist in the semifinal match of the Mid-Hudson Conference Championship. This is an amazing feat for 2 seasons of competition and was acknowledged during the match.

Congratulations to Leah Vitiello who helped lead the Falcons to the NJCAA National Tournament Ms. Vitiello.  Ms. Vitiello's accolades for the Fall 2022 season include:

Men's Soccer  

Head Coach Ian Wing and Assistant Coach Anton Sterlini completed their first season as coaches with a record of 2-9-1.  The team recognized 5 sophomores this season, co-captains Sam Dennehy and Javon Turner, along with Goalkeeper Jahaziel Jimenez, Jose-Daniel Ramirez, and Thomas Fitzmaurice.  DCC student-athletes received the individual accolades listed below.   

2022 Soccer Accolades 

The coaching staff recruiting at local high school tournaments/games/showcases for the Fall 2023 season.  The Coaches and Athletics Department are also planning some community-based fundraising initiatives to include camps, clinics, and indoor Futsal Leagues. 

   

Men's Basketball 

IN his second season as Head Coach, Robert Piano and the Men's Basketball team finished the Fall 2022 semester with a record of 8-5 overall and 7-1 in the Region.  The team is currently in 1st place in Region XV DIII Men's Basketball and received National Poll votes in December 2022, placing the team among the top 20 DIII teams in the Nation.   The team is led by sophomores Jeremiah Williams who was MHC Player of the Week for 11/14/22 and Victor Potter who was NJCAA Player of the Week for 11/21/22.  The team will return to competition in January 2023.  The Spring 2023 DIII Basketball Region Tournament is being held at Kingsborough CC on 2/24/23 – 2/26/23.  The Region Champion advances to the NJCAA DIII National Championship to be held at Herkimer CC from 3/14/23 – 3/18/23.   

The team is led by Sophomore Captains Jeremiah Williams (17.5 ppg, 3rpg, 3.6 apg) and Jacob Barnett (15.1 ppg, 5.7rpg, 1.7 apg) along with sophomore Victor Potter (14.8 ppg, 9.4 rpg, 1.8 bpg).   Mr. Williams was the Mid-Hudson Conference Player of the Week during the week of 11/14/22.  Mr. Potter was the NJCAA Player of the Week for 11/21/22.  The team returns to competition on 1/21/23 when they travel to play against Kingsborough Community College.   

Women's Basketball 

The Falcons welcomed Head Coach Tony Jackson to the coaching staff in Fall 2022.  The team in not competing during the Fall 2022-Spring 2023 season.   Coach Jackson and Assistant Coach Nyrie Holliman have been working with current students enrolled at DCC who are interested in participating and have been recruiting at high school level events and games for a return to competition in Fall 2023.    

Esports 

In his 2nd season as Head Coach, Joseph Mercado coached student-athlete Winston Contreras to the NBA 2K National Tournament where he finished 3rd Overall.  The team competed in a variety of individual and team-based games during the Fall 2022 semester.  The team is currently preparing to open the Esports Arena in Dutchess Hall for the Spring 2023 semester and will be competing again in an array of individual and team-based games at the Intramural, Open, and Invitational Levels.  Interested students should contact Coach Mercado and the athletic department about competing in Spring 2023.  

 Baseball 

The Coaching Staff is preparing for the Spring 2023 semester. The team began practices in the Fall 2022 semester.  Practices for the Spring 2023 season begin in January 2023.  Head Coach Al Hamell and the coaching staff is currently working with the sophomore student-athletes to find options for them to continue their scholastic-athletic careers at 4-year institutions.  

The DCC Athletic Department and Baseball program has two fundraising initiatives currently is progress. 

  • The program will again sponsor the Al Hammell Winter Baseball Initiative where DCC rents the gym on Sundays during the winter for 8 weeks of youth-based winter training sessions.  This initiative strengthens ties to community-based youth sports programs and generates revenue for the Men's Baseball program.  

  • The program is working with youth-based/high school/college programs to rent the baseball and softball fields during Summer 2023 to generate revenue for the program.  

Softball  

Charles Watt was hired as Head Coach for Women's Softball.  The team is preparing for a return to competition in Spring 2023 after two seasons canceled due to COVID (Spring 2020 and Spring 2021) and a season of non-participation (Spring 2022). Coach Watt and the staff are meeting with interested students on campus and preparing for practices to start in January 2023.   

The coaching staff is interested in offering tournaments, camps, clinics, and facility rentals for high school and youth-based program in the Summer of 2023.
